We've all heard the saying, "Early to bed, early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise." Most cliche sayings hold a level of truth. In this case, incorporating a morning gym routine into your daily life can have a profound impact on your overall health and well-being. In this blog post, we'll explore the numerous benefits of attending the gym early in the morning and can create a positive snowball effect for the day ahead.
1. Boosts Metabolism and Fat Burning
An advantage of working out in the morning is it's profound effect on your body's metabolism. A morning gym session ignites your body's calorie-burning process, which continues throughout the day. Aerobic exercise (cardio) in combination with anaerobic (strength training) can increase the amount of fat being burned throughout the day.
2. Enhances Mood and Reduces Stress
Exercise is a natural mood booster. Physical activity stimulates the release of neurotransmitters, which can help reduce stress, anxiety, and depression. Applying this known fact to an early morning gym session can change your to approach the rest of the day with enthusiasm and a clear mind.
3. Builds Consistency and Discipline
Establishing a morning gym routine requires discipline, commitment, and time management. A conscious effort needs to be made to wake up early and prioritize your workout, you are building valuable habits that extend beyond the gym. It is important to note the need to still get the appropriate 6-8hrs of sleep every night. In addition, this discipline can spill over into other aspects of your life, leading to improved productivity and personal growth.
4. Increases Energy Levels
Working out in the morning can leave you feeling more energized throughout the day. Physical activity improves blood flow and oxygen circulation, delivering a natural energy boost that can keep you active and alert for hours. Throughout the rest of the day you will find yourself more focused and efficient in your daily tasks, thanks to the energy kickstart from your morning gym routine.
5. Quieter Gym Environment
What I have noticed as my time as a personal trainer is that morning workouts offer a quieter and less crowded gym environment, compared to the bustling atmosphere during peak hours. No longer are the days you have to wait in line for a squat rack or bench press. This can in turn reduce your time spent at the gym waiting and make your workouts more efficient and enjoyable.
6. Better Sleep Quality
As previously noted, it is important to maintain 6-8hrs of sleep a night. Believe it or not, exercising in the morning can improve your sleep quality at night. Physical activity in the morning regulates your body's circadian rhythm, helping you feel more awake during the day and ready for rest at night. In other words, it is like drinking your cup of caffeine in the morning versus late in the evening.
7. Social Benefits
Morning gym-goers often find themselves part of a supportive and motivating community. You'll likely encounter like-minded individuals (who have potentially read this same blog post!) who share your dedication to health and fitness. I have noticed that building connections with fellow gym enthusiasts can foster a sense of camaraderie and encouragement, making your fitness journey more enjoyable and rewarding. Take it from me, a personal trainer, I love to see friendships form and regulars begin to hang out outside of the gym! It just warms my heart.
8. No Excuses
Often times when we leave the gym to the evening events tend to pop up. "Oh I have to pick up my son from practice." or "I have too much homework and not enough time" or "Shoot! I have to grocery shop". In the mornings, waking up early will give you time to accomplish these tasks in the afternoons without jeporadizing your routine.
This is your sign! You made it here, to the end of this post. Now take the jump. Embarking on a morning gym routine is a decision that can positively transform your life. The benefits are abundant. Incorporating exercise into your morning schedule not only sets a positive tone for the rest of the day but also instills discipline and consistency, leading to a healthier and more fulfilling lifestyle.
Remember, starting any new routine takes time and effort, so be patient with yourself. I recommended starting 3x a week for 2 weeks and every 2 weeks increasing the frequency by 1 to prevent burn out. You'll be at 5-6 days in no time! Once you experience the advantages of a morning workout firsthand, you'll wonder why you didn't adopt this life-changing habit sooner. So, rise and shine, and let the morning gym routine lead you towards a healthier and happier you!
